AESCHYLUS

KINSHIP, CITIZENSHIP AND POLIS

ABOUT THE COURSE>>

This ONLINE course is part of "The Cycle of Universal Theatre Authors", organized by the Mirada Experimental Theatre Association, with the collaboration of the Recycling Performance Factory Theatre Company. Through this course, not only will you get to know the written works of Aeschylus, the Greek playwright, poet and actor, but you will also learn about his biography and outstanding aspects of his life. You will get to know the meaning and relevance of his works, considered exemplary creations in universal literature. During the course, we will study and explore his trilogy The Oresteia, divided into three acts: Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers and The Eumenides. We will also study The Flies, a modernist adaptation of the above mentioned trilogy, written by Jean Paul Sartre. The overall goal of the course is to study and compare both plays, then proceeding to analyze them in the contemporary context, and from different perspectives: interpretive, political, feminist and existentialist. We are also going to explore different works that Plato, Aristotle and Jon Kott wrote about The Oresteia, trying to find possible links between the themes Aeschylus dealt with in his plays and our present postmodern world.
