IPHIGENIA HERE

Adapted & directed by Sabri Zekri

“Iphigenia here” is a work in progress in the field of laboratory theatre which is part of the doctoral thesis  Towards the Scenic Gender. Recycling of the gender of actor: through the deconstruction of the "Naghshpoosh" [dressing the figure] immitation techniques, that Sabri Zekri is developing under the PhD Programme “Women’s Studies: Gender Discourses and Practices” organized by  Instituto Universitario de Estudios de la Mujer y la Escuela de Doctorado de Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales y Jurídicas de Universidad de Granada.

Iphigenia, daughter of King Agamemnon, was asked as a sacrifice so that her father's troops could continue sailing to Troy. With her mouth covered and naked body, only her eyes remain, the dart of her gaze to implore compassion. Thus, Iphigenia becomes a symbol of violence against femininity. Used as a bargaining chip and instrument of power, her body becomes a space for violence. A phenomenon that we have all experienced in the context of the city together with the complicit silence of those around us. Through this collective creation we want to tell our memory of Ifigenia, as a form of denunciation about the objectification of women and the impunity of the aggressors. Adding to the interpretation colors, songs, unstable pieces such as islands or ships in the sea, the articulation of the body and space, we express our experiences to analyze the role of women. Also applying the game with masks as a Greek symbol and change of characters, we reflect on our role in society and our false perception of equality, in an unstable situation that puts our femininity under attack.
