IPHYGENIA IN CAIRO
Directed by Sabri Zekri
In 2014, Sabri Zekri, director and actor´s trainer, was invited to develop the physical theatre project with dancers of the Cairo Contemporary Dance Centre. During the workshop Sabri applied the method of anthropology theatre based on collective research and creation, usuing folks, traditional dances, classic plays, body and voice expression. The aim was to create a performance based on the central theme of sexual harassment and inspired by Agamemnon, the first Act of Greek trilogy The Oresteia by Aeschylus.
Syunopsis>>
Due to the lack of wind after the 2011 revolution, the Egyptian society is paralyzed. Agamemnon, the new Egypt leader, must rule the country. He is afraid that the military coup. The new society needs blood to calm itself down, and it seems the sexual harassment is the best excuse. All women in Cairo are Iphigenia, they must be sacrificed for the establishment of a new government.
